Spring 2020 Plan & List of Seeds

Autumn Plantings – New plant plugs:

From Marshalls

Cauliflower – Clemen x16 plants (July despatch)
  •  F1 Hybrid variety
  •  Prefers full sun
  •  Prefers part shade

Grow this mid-winter cauliflower for rewarding spring harvests of healthy heads full of edible white curds. Cauliflowers are fantastically versatile and Clemen is no exception. It’s an F1 hybrid too so naturally shows great vigour.

At harvest time in March and April, the white heads present themselves well, so they’re easy to see, cut and remove.

Clemen has proved to be very winter-hardy, capable of withstanding frost and snow- so no need to worry about its fate in the winter months.

Before planting, incorporate bulky compost or manure into the soil, to both increase the nutrient levels in the soil and improve the soil texture to give Clemen the best start.

Space young plant at 75cm (30in) apart in summer to a sunny position.

Cauliflowers are hungry as they are thirsty, so will appreciate a moist, fertile soil. Throughout summer, keep removing surrounding weeds, so ‘Clemen’ gets the maximum water, light and nutrients from the soil. It will then reward you with healthy white heads the following spring.

Cabbage – Duncan x16 plants (August despatch)
Cabbage Duncan is an excellent ‘all round’ variety, with great versatility for cooking in many different ways.

It can be picked as unhearted leafy greens in late autumn from a late August planting, or over wintered and harvested as a whole head in the spring, again from an August planting.

Plants are despatched in late August for cutting in Jan – April.

From D T Brown

Swede Tweed F1 (Brassica napobrassica) x 10 plants (July despatch)
British-bred, it is early and vigorous, producing uniformly round, purple shouldered roots with a delicious, cream-coloured flesh. Performs better than other swedes on less fertile soils. A very good source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins B and C. Final spacing of 10-15cm (4-6in) apart.

The bees will love the mix of flowers, so they can also help with pollination of vegetables, helping with the harvest later in the season.

As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist.
