June 1st Update
Over the weekend, I decided to have a tidy up in the garden, in particular, getting rid of weeds. This will free-up space for the beans, peas, cabbage, cauliflower and swede.
I have also removed the weeds from the black buckets ready for the carrots and spring onions. Amazon will be delivering some 1 litre pots as most of the ones I have left are broken, later in the month.
This included getting rid of the straggly Nasturtians from last year – I have bought some more seeds from Suttons – Princess of India. (Tropaeolum majus)
“A superb dwarf form of the popular ‘Empress of India’. The growth habit is, unusually for nasturtiums, very uniform and compact, and the masses of deep red blooms are held well above the dark foliage. HA – Hardy annual. Height 20-25cm (8-10”). Dwarf, single-flowered type. Please note: Flowers are edible, and ideal for use in salads”.
I also pricked out the cucumbers, but it seems that only 2 seedlings have survived. This is a bit of a learning curve, having never grown cucumbers before, especially from seed. I will keep my fingers crossed x
Today, I pricked out 2 Gardener’s Delight Tomato seedling after a couple of hours sitting in the sunshine. This was done using the green dibber set that I managed to find the other day, together with the white plastic plant markers.
The potatoes are growing steadily and have been earthed up, and I will repeat this process in a couple of weeks time.
We had our first harvest of radishes last night – crunchy and delicious!
I will sow some more tomorrow. The rest of the salad items are very slow to grow/germinate, (I will give them a little more time before I call it quits and resow the lettuce and rocket). Interestingly, the Chanteray Carrots are growing steadily.
I have re-watered the garden this afternoon and will do so again tomorrow, depending if we get any rain or not. I thinik some of the grass seeds have germinated, but there are still large patches that have not taken yet.
Hopefully, Lewis will visit on Friday and set the paving slab area up – it would be great to get a bird bath put there, so we can watch their antics when they get used to the facility!
Other than that, jobs that still remain are:
cutting the hedge, painting the fence and gates – back and front, the lawns and the right hand side of the backgarden – using pebbles, perhaps?
