Sowing on Sunday

Box 1 – Brussels Sprouts Groniger – here’s the blurb:

Brussels Sprout ‘Groninger’ is a second early variety noted for its great tasting sprouts, particularly after the first frost.
It produces medium sized green sprouts and gives a steady supply of great tasting sprouts through the autumn and into the winter.

Groninger has a wide sowing window, particularly useful if the weather is being a little awkward! It can be sown under glass in February or March (to plant outdoors in April to May) or can be sown directly outdoors in April or May. Harvest October to December – perfect timing for that all important Christmas Dinner! The growing period from sowing to harvest is 187 days.

Box 2 – Cucumber Marketmore (Cucumis sativus) – here’s the blurb:

Prolific, slicing variety A superb, tasty, straight-fruited slicing cucumber with excellent resistance to powdery and downy mildew. Ideal for culture in pots and grow bags. Outdoor ridge type. Sow indoors for surest results February-April, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, on edge, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 21-24°C (70-75°F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. When plants have developed 3 or 4 leaves, transplant to 12cm (5”) pots and grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 60cm (2′) apart, during May-June, into fertile, well-drained soil. Or sow outdoors May-June, for ease, where they are to crop. Sow two seeds per position, 0.5cm (¼”) deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 60cm (2′) between rows. When large enough, thin to leave the stronger plant. Harvest: July-October.

Box 3 – Tomato Gardeners Delight (Solanum lycopersicum) – here’s the blurb:

Probably the most widely-grown tomato in the country, and deservedly so. A ‘cherry’ type, with bite-sized fruits, which are perfect for a snack or for popping in lunchboxes, It’s one of the most reliable toms you’ll ever grow, trouble-free and prolific with long trusses of richly-flavoured sweet red fruits.

Growing Instructions: Sow in a frost-free greenhouse or windowsill, potting on seedlings individually as they grow. Once all danger of frost has passed, plant into greenhouse borders or into growbags, or harden plants off and plant outside in rich soil in a sunny spot. Tie in to supports and pinch out side shoots: keep well-watered and feed weekly once flowers form. Keep water levels in the soil consistent to prevent blossom end rot and split fruit. Increase water in hot spells and reduce in cool weather to keep the soil constantly damp.
