Spring and Summer 2019 – Sowing and Planting

Flowers

  • California Poppy – semi flowered
  • Candytuft Fairy mixed – beautiful
  • Cornflower Double Mixed – semi flowered
  • Lobelia Colour Cascade – beautiful
  • Marigold French Dwarf Double – beautiful
  • Nasturtium trailing – eaten by caterpillars/butterflies
  • Sweet Pea, (Royal Family Blue, Red, White & Pink)
  • Viola Mixed, – failed

Along with the garden-ready flowers coming from T&M in May: Geranium ‘Best Red’ F1 Hybrid, Lobelia ‘Monsoon’, Coreopsis ‘Golden Joy’ and Delphinium ‘Magic Fountains Mixed’ – beautiful

I might also sow some meadow flowers at the bottom of the garden, getting Lewis to create a hill where they can grow. – failed

The bees will love the mix of flowers, so they can also help with pollination of vegetables, helping with the harvest later in the season.

As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist.

Vegetables & Herbs

  • Beans Dwarf Hestia – Failed
  • Brussel Spouts – eaten by caterpillars/butterflies
  • Cabbage (Greyhound) – eaten by caterpillars/butterflies
  • Carrots (Autumn King) – successful
  • Courgettes Black Beauty – successful
  • Onions – Red Baron, Spring Onion White Lisbon, ok but not a large yield
  • Peas – Kelveden Wonder, didn’t do as well as I hoped
  • Seed Potatoes – Sharps Express First Earlies, ok but not a large yield
  • Spinach Perpetual, didn’t do as well as I hoped
  • Sweet Pepper (Red & Yellow) growing indoors, didn’t do as well as I hoped
  • Cherry Tomato Cerise x 2, didn’t do as well as I hoped
  • Parsnip – White Gem.- I may have at least 1 parsnip!!! (actually 2 large ones!)
  • Seed Potatoes – Second cropping – Maris Peer, ok but not a large yield

Herbs

Basil, Coriander, Rosemary, Thyme, Mint – successful
